FAQ 's

Caretaker?

Our Caretaker Yeison Powell lives a few minute's walk from Casa Serenity By The Sea. He was born and raised on Bastimentos and has tons of local knowledge. He can be contacted with issues or suggestions.

+507 6341 4165

Boat Taxis?

Boat taxis are everywhere. The captains wake up before dawn and are ready to go. Bring cash. It's $5 each way to Bocas Town (no tip needed). MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE FROM THE BASTIMENTOS DOCK! Yes they also operate at night, but after 10pm they can get scarce coming back to Bastimentos so plan accordingly.

Boat Excursions?

We like to use locals versus tourist companies. If you have an adventure in mind please let us know and we would be happy to get it scheduled for you! Tips for the boat captains are appreciated.

Restaurants?

There are several restaurant/bars on Bastimentos within walking distance from the property. A few favorites are Alvin & Kecha's, Lysset's, The Firefly, and Reggae Bites. There are lots of others a short boat ride away in Bocas Town.

Beach?

There isn't a traditional beach on Oceanside. We are surrounded by smooth cobblestone that leads out to coral reef. The closest large beach is Wizard's which is about 25min hike away (or you can take a boat).

Snorkeling?

Yes you can snorkel right off the property (as long as the waves are not too big). The reef that lines Oceanside is beautiful! Reef Booties and Diving/Lobster Gloves are highly recommended!

We do not have complimentary snorkel gear. However cheapish stuff is sold in town. Or if you are particular about your gear, then we definitely recommend bringing your own.

BRING A SURFACE FLAG AND USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM FOR YOUR SAFETY!!!!

Laundry?

Yeison can provide personal laundry service for $12 per load (paid to him directly) if needed during your stay.

Trash/Recycling?

Yeison can remove trash if needed during your stay. We ask that you be eco-minded and try to reduce the amount of trash produced by any means. We have trash cans that have a separate section for recycling bottles, cans, & plastic.

Wifi?

Yes we have private networks for each casita. However we are in a remote location and the signal can be spotty at times. Sometimes there is no signal at all.

If you work from your computer and must have reliable internet during your stay, we recommend bringing your own Starlink system.

Electricity?

Yes we are connected to the main power grid. However we are located on an archipelago and there is a possibility of total loss of power. If this happens it is usually back up and running in short order. We ask that you bring an eco-friendly mindset here: please turn off lights etc. when not in use. We have standard 12v outlets like in the US. We have a generator for the worst case scenarios.

Air Conditioning/Industrial Fans?

Yes we have AC in each casita. They are small units which put out a limited amount of cold air. It is recommended for use only while sleeping and only if you "need" it. We have screened windows and screened doors which harness wonderful ocean breezes due to our geographical location. We also have powerful industrial strength fans installed inside and outside the casitas for comfort.

Bring/Don't Bring?

Bring: Headlamp, Water Shoes, Re-Fillable Water Container, Beach Towel, eco-safe Sun Screen, Bug Repellent, Cash (There is an ATM at the bank in Bocas Town), Sweater, Rain Apparel, Snorkel Gear, Surf Board

Don't Bring: Heavy Luggage, Rolling Luggage, anything that would end up as trash (it's hard to get rid of trash on a tropical island)

We have (4) 2600L rainwater collection tanks. These feed the faucets and showers and is 4x filtered (from the COLD side of the kitchen faucet) for our drinking water.

We have septic tanks and do not flush anything but human waste. Bidets have been installed to reduce paper waste.

We do not accommodate children or pets. Minimum age to book is 18.

No need to exchange before you come to Panama. Panama Balboa is 1:1 on the US dollar and are interchangeable everywhere. Most places take Visa and other major cards.

There is a bank in Bocas Town with an ATM for cash.

Tropical Microclimate with rain year-round.

Wet Season:

November-December

Dry Season:

January-May, September-October

It can be raining and then clear up in no time in the tropics. It's hard to predict. Bring a sweater just in case it gets chilly!

Bocas del Toro is a tropical destination and tends to have more rain than other parts of Panama. This is what keeps Bocas green and full of life. Surf season is wetter than the rest of the year however this season rarely produces enough rain to ruin a vacation. The sea is also more active rough during these months, which is perfect for surfers, but may decrease visibility for divers or beach loungers.

The first dry season runs from February through May and during this period it is not uncommon to miss the raindrops all together. The driest and sunniest months of the year are in September and October, where divers and beach-goers will be treated with high visibility and blue skies. However, since we are in the tropics, short storms can come and go at any time. The great part about this tropical positioning though, is that we enjoy warm temperatures and light ocean breezes all year round.

We statistically have ZERO hurricanes here in Panama.
